This season the shirt has been given a new lease of life.

The shirt is nothing new for sure. It's a tried and tested wardrobe essential but right now, it's anything but basic. This season, it's been given a new lease of life and it's having a major fashion moment.  From the classic borrowed from the boys button-down, to modern updates with asymmetrical hemlines, the options out there are currently endless
Here's what  you need to know about wearing the shirt this season:

1.  Colour and fabric are key - Crisp white, light blue or fresh white and blue striped cotton shirts are this season's heroes.

2. Keep the vibe more undone - slim fit shirts are best avoided and kept strictly for work.

3. Look for a defining detail, such as pleated details or an open back. This one by Cheap Monday definitely ticks all the right boxes.

4. Try a button-down with a twist - Classic but contemporary at the same time, this TOME shirt is not just a shirt; it's a statement piece.

5. Shirt "derivatives" are also trending. These include cotton-poplin, shirt inspired tops in a myriad of incarnations. This on-trend off-the-shoulder top by J.W.Anderson below is on point.

Pairing the shirt (and its derivatives) is easy as it is such a versatile piece. However, nothing beats the shirt and denim combination. A denim cropped flare is a perfect match. For a casual ensemble pair this look with sneakers. If you want to take it up a notch for an evening look, mules or a pair of lace up heels will do the trick. Finish off with gold jewellery.
